  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (or pecans)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Casserole:

  • 1 loaf French bread, cubed (about 1012 cups)
  • 6 eggs, whisked
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Crumb Topping

  1. Mix softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and walnuts in a bowl until crumbly. Set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Bread Mixture

  1. Cut French bread into 1-inch cubes and place in a large bowl.
  2. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, toss gently, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Step 3: Assemble in the Slow Cooker

  1. Rub 1 tablespoon of butter inside the slow cooker to prevent sticking.
  2. Transfer the bread mixture to the slow cooker and spread evenly.
  3. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the bread.

Step 4: Cook the Casserole

  1. Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours.
  2. For a firmer texture, place a paper towel under the lid to absorb excess moisture.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Serve warm, topped with powdered sugar, syrup, or fresh fruit for extra sweetness.
